Acceptance and Commitment Therapy

Difficulties can arise in life, but it is how you react that can make a difference in ones overall mental well being.

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) is a research-based method of psychotherapy that utilizes the practice of mindfulness — a mental state achieved by focusing on the present moment. It is a short-term form of treatment based on a philosophy that everyone has the potential to remain in control of how they react, think and feel.

Although it takes some discipline, mindfulness helps people to acknowledge the value in all emotions and the strength to take action that will alter their meaning. Its therapeutic effect helps someone to stop suppressing emotions and embrace them, rather than avoiding them — a form of behavior that can be destructive and cause problems.

Psychologists trained in Acceptance and Commitment Therapy helps clients to stop suppressing their emotions and embrace them.

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy is often used to treat people who have difficulty altering negative behaviors such as addiction, or are diagnosed with anxiety, depression and bipolar disorder.

The results improve quality of life both mentally and physically and their ability to accept their reactions, choose a valued-direction and to take action. Clients feel better, which leads to a better understanding of the truth.

Each session will focus on helping clients to identify their strengths and weaknesses, take a hard look at their sense of self and prioritize what is most important to them. Goals are set according to those values and to be successful clients must be disciplined in making a plan to reach their goals and continue to follow through. Over time, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy is effective in creating a mindset where someone allows their emotions to come and go rather than struggling with them, as well as embrace the here and now.
