5 Lessons from Phillip’s TMS Treatment

5 Lessons from Phillip’s TMS Treatment

With mental health, you have to take responsibility for your own recovery. You are worth it.

Phillip, TMS patient

Our expertise in Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) treatment is one of many reasons to partner with Sonder for your emotional wellness care.

Want proof? Just ask our patients.

That’s what Eden Prairie Local News did as part of their recent feature on TMS technology. Specifically, they spoke with Phillip, one of our former TMS patients who experienced firsthand the benefits of this treatment.

And we think there’s a lot to learn from Phillip’s story.

Here are 5 lessons we all can take from Phillip’s experience with TMS:

1. Depression can be persistent.

As Phillip discovered, depression often doesn’t resolve on its own. It can persist for years, even decades, and cause disruption to sleep, mood, energy levels, concentration, and social interest. In some cases, it can even manifest in suicidal thinking and other striking symptoms. Many people, like Phillip, suffer for large portions of their lives carrying the invisible weight of depression on their backs.

2. Treatment is not one-size-fits-all.

Finding the right combination of treatment options can take time and effort, even with the help of a skilled provider. Phillip spent over a decade pursuing various modalities, including both outpatient and inpatient treatment programs and more than a dozen medications. For people with depression that is unresponsive to treatment, like Phillip’s, a thorough evaluation of current care options can be a valuable step in the process.

3. TMS can be an excellent option.

With most people still unaware that it exists, TMS might be the most promising depression treatment you’ve never heard of. Noninvasive, non-sedating, and without any of the side effects commonly experienced with other depression treatments, TMS also outperforms antidepressants in terms of patient response and lasting results. It’s been FDA-approved for the treatment of Major Depressive Disorder (as well as Obsessive Compulsive Disorder and anxious depression) and is covered by most insurances, including Medicare and Tricare.

4. At Sonder, we’re experts in TMS.

To date, we’ve treated over 700 patients and administered over 13,000 TMS treatments. We’re not only the largest TMS provider in the state of Minnesota, but we’ve also received the Diamond status designation among NeuroStar TMS clinics as well as consistently exceptional ratings from patients for our transparency, professionalism, and high level of service at every stage of treatment.

5. The results can be remarkable.

We’re honored to witness the impressive results our patients experience throughout TMS treatment. For Phillip, the most significant change has been the increase in his social activity. When he was struggling with depression, Phillip withdrew from many of his relationships and spent much of his time in bed. Now, he describes his social life as “very active, very robust”. He’s reconnected with important people in his life, has begun writing fiction, and wakes up excited to experience life.
