Minnesota's #1 Neurostar TMS Provider

Over 20,000 TMS treatments provided

A new path to relief from OCD symptoms.

Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) is a chronic condition that can significantly impact daily life. For those who have not found relief through traditional treatments like medication and therapy, Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) offers a promising alternative.
At Sonder Behavioral Health & Wellness, we are proud to offer NeuroStar® Advanced Therapy for OCD—an FDA-cleared, non-invasive treatment that targets the root of OCD symptoms and helps restore balance in the brain.

What is TMS for OCD?

TMS stands for Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation, a treatment that uses targeted magnetic pulses to stimulate specific areas of the brain associated with OCD symptoms. By enhancing neural activity in the cerebral cortex, TMS can reduce compulsive thoughts and behaviors.

Unlike medications, TMS is a non-drug, non-invasive therapy with minimal side effects. This makes it an ideal option for individuals who have not found lasting relief through traditional treatments.

How Does TMS Work?

NeuroStar TMS works by delivering gentle magnetic pulses to the brain's prefrontal cortex, an area involved in regulating behavior and thought processes. These pulses help balance the activity of the brain regions responsible for obsessive thoughts and compulsive behaviors.

Since TMS is non-invasive and does not require surgery or anesthesia, patients can experience its benefits without the systemic side effects commonly associated with medication.

Treatment Overview

  • Indication: Adjunct treatment for adults (18+) with OCD
  • Session Details: 29 sessions over approximately 6 weeks (5 days per week)
  • Treatment Duration: Each session lasts about 18 minutes
  • Eligibility: Patients must have a history of psychotherapy and have tried at least two antidepressants without satisfactory improvement.

What to Expect During Treatment

TMS therapy at Sonder is provided in a comfortable, welcoming outpatient setting that allows you to maintain your daily routine. Each session involves:

  • Sitting comfortably in a treatment chair
  • A trained provider positioning the TMS coil on your head
  • The delivery of gentle magnetic pulses while you remain awake and alert
  • No need for anesthesia or downtime

After each session, you can immediately return to your regular activities, as there is no recovery time required.

Why Consider TMS for OCD?

  • FDA-Cleared: Clinically validated as an adjunct treatment for OCD, providing relief for treatment-resistant cases.
  • Non-Invasive: No surgery, anesthesia, or systemic side effects like those associated with medications.
  • Compatible with Existing Treatments: TMS can be used alongside medication and therapy to enhance results.
  • Minimal Disruptions: Short, 18-minute sessions with no recovery time, allowing you to continue your daily life without interruption.

*Outcomes Registry data was published by Sackeim HA, et al. J Affective Disorders, 2020, 277(12):65-74. The outcomes reported represent the subset of study patients for which the CGI-S data was reported before and after an acute course of NeuroStar TMS. Patients were treated under real-world conditions where patients may have been prescribed concomitant depression treatments including medications. “Measurable relief” was defined as a CGI-S score <=3 and “complete remission” was defined as a CGI-S score <=2 at the end of treatment.
