Mental Health Is Public Health

Mental Health Is Public Health

Caring for your mental health isn’t just personal. It’s public health in action.

During National Public Health Week, we’re reminded that individual well-being and community wellness go hand in hand. And in today’s world, there’s no denying it: Mental health is public health.

When we prioritize emotional wellness—not just in crisis, but as part of our everyday health—it ripples outward, improving families, workplaces, schools, and entire communities.

At Sonder, we believe mental health care should be accessible, evidence-based, and holistic. That’s why we offer a full continuum of support, from therapy and psychiatric medication management to advanced treatments like TMS and Spravato for treatment-resistant depression.

In this post, we’re highlighting the connection between mental health and public health, and sharing our holistic approach to supporting both:

Why mental health is public health

Mental health doesn’t exist in a vacuum. Depression, anxiety, trauma, and other conditions affect how people relate to others, how they work, and how they care for themselves and their communities. Left untreated, these conditions can drive health disparities, economic hardship, and systemic inequities.

Recognizing mental health as public health means acknowledging that access to effective, personalized treatment is a shared responsibility—and a necessary investment in a healthier society.

A holistic approach to mental health care

There’s no one-size-fits-all solution when it comes to mental health, which is why we approach healing from multiple angles. At Sonder, we help people find the right combination of services for their needs:

Therapy

Our licensed therapists offer compassionate support grounded in clinical expertise. Whether you’re managing life transitions, processing trauma, or navigating anxiety or depression, therapy provides a foundation for growth and emotional resilience.

Psychiatry & Medication Management

When symptoms are severe or persistent, psychiatric support can make a meaningful difference. Our providers collaborate with patients to find the right medication strategy—whether short-term or ongoing—as part of a broader care plan.

Advanced options for Treatment-Resistant Depression

For those seeking a complement to traditional approaches, we offer two advanced options: transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) and Spravato (esketamine nasal spray).

TMS: A noninvasive option that works

Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) is an FDA-cleared, noninvasive treatment for depression that uses gentle magnetic pulses to stimulate areas of the brain involved in mood regulation. It’s especially effective for those who haven’t responded to medication and therapy alone.

TMS is also now FDA-approved as a first-line treatment for adolescents with depression—a major step forward in public mental health.

Spravato: Fast-acting relief

Spravato (esketamine) is an FDA-approved nasal spray designed for adults with treatment-resistant depression or depression with suicidal thoughts. Administered in a monitored setting, Spravato can offer rapid relief when other treatments have failed.

Unlike traditional medications, which may take weeks to work, Spravato may begin easing symptoms within hours or days—providing a powerful tool for those in acute distress.

Your personalized wellness plan

The real magic happens when these services work together. A patient may begin with therapy and medication, later adding TMS or Spravato as needed. Others may start with advanced treatments and integrate therapy for deeper healing and behavior change. Our providers work collaboratively to ensure each care plan is:

  • evidence-based

  • responsive to individual needs

  • supportive of long-term recovery

By offering a comprehensive mental health care model, we help individuals reclaim their lives—and contribute to stronger, more connected communities.

This National Public Health Week, prioritize your emotional well-being

If you’ve been struggling, you’re not alone—and you don’t have to wait for things to get worse before seeking support. Whether you’re interested in therapy, exploring medication, or want to learn more about advanced treatments like TMS or Spravato, we’re here to help.
